Ephesians 5:21-33
Dwain Tissell

(see video used as introduction)

As men and women, we are COMPLEMENTARY but not IDENTICAL.

FOUR COMPLEMENTS YOU NEED TO LIVE YOUR WAY TO LOVE

22For wives, this means submit your husbands as to the Lord. Ephesians 5:22 (NLT)

25For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. Ephesians 5:25 (NLT)

1. LOVE & RESPECT

28There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28 (NLT)

23For a husband is the head of his wife as Christ is the head of the church. He is the Savior of his body, the church. 24As the church submits to Christ, so you wives should submit to your husbands in everything. 25For husbands, this means love your wives, just as Christ loved the church. He gave up his life for her 26to make her holy and clean, washed by the cleansing of God's word. 27He did this to present her to himself as a glorious church without a spot or wrinkle or any other blemish. Ephesians 5:23-26a (NLT)

2. LEADERSHIP & Glory

19Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry...26If you claim to be religious but don't control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. James 1:19,26 (NLT)

Instead, she will be holy and without fault. 28In the same way, husbands ought to love their wives as they love their own bodies. For a man who loves his wife actually shows love for himself. 29No one hates his own body but feeds and cares for it, just as Christ cares for the church. 30And we are members of his body. Ephesians 5:26b-29 (NLT)

3. SELF-ABANDON & OPENNESS

16But as the Ark of the LORD entered the City of David, Michal, the daughter of Saul, looked down from her window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she was filled with contempt for him. 2 Samuel 6:16 (NLT)

31As the Scriptures say, "A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one." 32This is a great mystery, but it is an illustration of the way Christ and the church are one. Ephesians 5:31-32 (NLT)

4. ADVENTURE & MYSTERY

24This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Genesis 2:24 (NLT)

33So again I say, each man must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband. Ephesians 5:33 (NLT)
