Matthew 1:1-17
Dwain Tissell

THE CROSS MEANS...

1This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham. Matthew 1:1 (NLT)

1. EVERYBODY GETS TO START OVER.

2Abraham was the father of Isaac.
Isaac was the father of Jacob.
Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers.
3Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah (whose mother was Tamar).
5Salmon was the father of Boaz (whose mother was Rahab).
Boaz was the father of Obed (whose mother was Ruth).
Obed was the father of Jesse.
6Jesse was the father of King David.
David was the father of Solomon (whose mother was Bathsheba, the widow of Uriah). Matthew 1:2-3; 5-6 (NLT)

2. EVERYBODY IS VALUED.

9God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 10This is real love-not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. 1 John 4:9-10 (NLT)

17All those listed above include fourteen generations from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the Babylonian exile, and fourteen from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah. Matthew 1:17 (NLT)

3. GOD WANTS YOU TO "WOW" EVERYBODY YOU MEET.

9As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at his tax collector's booth. "Follow me and be my disciple," Jesus said to him. So Matthew got up and followed him.
10Later, Matthew invited Jesus and his disciples to his home as dinner guests, along with many tax collectors and other disreputable sinners. 11But when the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with such scum?"
12When Jesus heard this, he said, "Healthy people don't need a doctor-sick people do." 13Then he added, "Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.' For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners." Matthew 9:9-13 (NLT)
